Most people pick a wastegate by copying whatever the last car with a similar turbo ran. That works right up until boost climbs past target at the top of third gear and no amount of controller trimming pulls it back. Wastegate size is a flow question, so the turbine housing you chose and the exhaust your engine actually makes matter more than the power number you are chasing.

The short answer

  • A 45mm gate is the safe default for most single turbo street and club builds on a 2.0L to 3.0L engine.
  • Go to 50mm or 60mm when the turbine housing is small for the engine, when you want low boost out of a big turbo, or when the engine is a big six or a V8.
  • The mistake we see most often is a 38mm gate hung off a big single, followed by a month of blaming the boost controller for creep.
  • Order the spring, the weld on flanges and the V-band clamps at the same time as the gate.

How an external wastegate works and what the sizes mean

An external wastegate bolts to the exhaust manifold ahead of the turbine and dumps gas around the turbine wheel. A spring holds the valve shut. Boost pressure fed to the actuator works against that spring, and the valve opens once there is enough pressure to beat it.

The number in the name is the valve diameter. A 38mm valve passes less exhaust than a 50mm valve at the same lift. That one fact explains most of what goes wrong on the dyno.

Boost creep is what happens when the gate runs out of capacity. The valve sits wide open, exhaust keeps piling into the turbine, and boost climbs anyway. No electronic controller fixes that. You need more valve, a bigger port feeding it, or a larger turbine housing.

Spring pressure sets base boost, which is the lowest boost the car will run. Turbosmart put it in the product name, so a HyperGate45 14psi is set up for a higher base than the 7psi version of the same gate. Pick a base you are happy to drive on and add the rest with a controller.

Flange style is the other half of the decision. Tial's MVS 38mm and MVR 44mm gates use V-bands at the inlet and outlet, while the F38 is the older two bolt inlet. V-band is easier to clock on the manifold and easier to pull off later.

Picking the right one for your build

Small frames and mild engines

38mm and 40mm gates suit small turbos on 1.6L to 2.0L engines, and stock frame upgrades where the turbine housing is already doing the restricting. The Tial 38mm MVS V-Band is the default in this class. If your manifold is cut for a two bolt flange, the Tial F38 drops straight on. Turbosmart's GenV WG40 CompGate40 buys you a bit more valve without much more room, which helps in a tight bay where a 45 will not sit.

The 45mm middle ground

Most builds should land here. A 45mm gate has the capacity for a 2.0L to 3.0L engine on a modern turbo at real boost, and it still packages under a bonnet without a fight. Start with the GenV WG45 HyperGate45 14psi. The HyperGate45 Lite saves weight if that matters to you. On the Tial side, the 44mm MVR does the same job with V-bands both ends.

Big singles, big cubes and low boost

Two situations call for a 50mm or 60mm gate. The first is a large turbo you want to run at modest boost, because a low target means the gate has to bypass a huge amount of gas to keep the turbine slow. The second is an engine that simply makes more exhaust than a 45 can pass. The GenV WG50 ProGate50 covers most of that ground, and the WG60 PowerGate60 or the Tial V60 is for the drag and big cube crowd.

High base boost and gas control

If your base boost target sits well above what a normal spring gives, Turbosmart build a HyperGate45 HP 35psi version. A street car is usually better off with a standard spring and an electronic controller.

What to buy with it

The gate is half the parts list. You also need weld on inlet and outlet flanges, V-band clamps, and often a different spring once the car has seen the dyno. Should I choose a V-band or two bolt wastegate?

V-band gates like the Tial MVS and MVR are easier to clock on the manifold and quicker to pull off for service. A two bolt flange such as the F38 still makes sense when the manifold is already built for it and you do not want to cut and reweld.

Do I need a screamer pipe or can I plumb the gate back in?

Both work. An open dump is loud, which is a problem for noise rules on a road car, so most street builds plumb the gate outlet back into the exhaust behind the turbine. Decide before you order, because it changes which outlet flange and clamp you need.
