Boost control is where a lot of turbo builds go wrong, and it is almost never because the part was faulty. A bleed valve turned up on a warm night makes different boost to the same valve on a cold morning, and the engine has no say in the matter. The choice between a manual controller and an electronic one comes down to how much you want the car to look after itself.
The short answer
- Running spring pressure plus a little, on a car you drive and watch? A manual controller like the Turbosmart Boost Tee does the job for the price of a set of plugs.
- Want the same boost in every gear, on every day, with an overboost cut behind it? That is an electronic controller such as the Turbosmart eBoost3 or the GFB G-Force III.
- Already running a Link or Haltech ECU? Skip the separate box and buy a solenoid. The ECU does closed loop boost with rpm, gear and knock in the same calculation.
- The common mistake is asking a controller to fix a wastegate problem. If the gate is too small or the spring is wrong, no controller saves you.
What a manual boost controller does well
A manual controller is a bleed valve in the signal line to your wastegate actuator. Turn the knob and the actuator sees less pressure than the manifold, so it holds the gate shut longer and boost climbs. There is nothing to fail electrically and nothing to program.
The Boost Tee is the one most NZ cars end up with, and it also comes in blue. If you would rather adjust from the driver's seat than from the engine bay, the in cabin boost controller mounts where you can reach it. For a car that runs two settings, one for the street and one for when you mean it, the Dual Stage Boost Controller V2 switches between them, and Turbosmart even sells a rocket launcher switch for the cabin end of it. GFB's version of the simple approach is the Atomic single stage controller.
What you give up is consistency. Boost with a bleed valve moves with intake temperature, altitude and how hard the gear is loading the engine. Fourth will usually make more than second. Spring pressure is also your floor.
What an electronic boost controller does well
An electronic controller reads manifold pressure and pulses a solenoid to hold a target you set. That means the same boost hot or cold, and it means the controller can be told to do things in stages rather than all at once.
The eBoost3 is Turbosmart's current unit, in black or silver, with a simpler eBoost Street 40psi below it. GFB splits the same idea into the G-Force III and the D-Force with an EGT sensor, the latter for people who want exhaust temperature in the same display as boost, with a separate EGT kit if you need the probe on its own. AEM's Tru-BoostX gauge type controller does the job in a gauge body when dash space is spoken for. Diesel and VNT owners have their own options in the D-Force diesel unit and the V2 VNT controller.
The catch is that an electronic controller still cannot see rpm, gear, coolant temperature or knock. It knows boost, and that is all.
Where they differ in a real build
Plumbing is similar for both. A manual controller needs one hose run and a place to mount the knob. An electronic one adds a solenoid, power, earth and a pressure reference, and that solenoid wants to sit away from exhaust heat.
Solenoids are where three port and four port matters. A three port solenoid, like the GFB spare 3 port or the Haltech 3 port, bleeds pressure away from the actuator so you can hold boost above spring pressure. A four port version, such as the GFB 4 port or the Haltech 4 port, can feed the other side of an external gate as well, which is how people run boost below spring pressure or hold a low target cleanly. Haltech's CO2 dual solenoid and pressure sensor kit uses regulated gas instead of manifold pressure for big single setups, and the DCMD driver handles motorised valve control.
Then there is the ECU path, which is what most tuned cars in this country end up on. A G4X or an Elite runs boost against rpm, gear, throttle position and knock, and it will pull the target down when something goes wrong rather than keep chasing it. If your ECU has the outputs spare, Haltech boost control hardware or the Link boost control range is a cheaper and better answer than another box on the pillar.
Tuning support is even either way. Any NZ tuner can dial in an ECU boost table on the dyno. With a standalone controller they set the target and hand you the remote, which only works if the tune was done at the boost you drive at.

Street car on a stock or mild turbo, spring pressure plus a small bump: manual, and spend the difference on a wideband. A boost tee and a gauge will tell you more about the engine than a fancy controller ever will.
Track car: electronic, or ECU control if the ECU is already there. Consistency lap to lap is worth more than peak number, and boost that climbs as the intercooler heat soaks is how people find their head gasket.
Drag car: ECU control, every time. Boost by time and by gear is the whole game off the line, and a bleed valve cannot do it.
Daily that gets driven year round: ECU control if you have it, otherwise a modest electronic unit with the overboost cut set. Cold NZ mornings make more boost than the warm afternoon you set it on.

FAQ
What is the difference between a boost tap and a boost controller?
Boost tap is a nickname for a simple bleed style manual controller plumbed into the wastegate signal line. It is the same idea as a boost tee, sold under a different name. Anything that reads boost, holds a target and corrects itself is an electronic controller.
Can a boost controller lower boost below the wastegate spring?
A bleed style manual controller cannot. It only makes the actuator see less pressure than the manifold, so spring pressure is your floor. Running under spring pressure needs a four port solenoid plumbed to both sides of the actuator or gate.
Do I still need a boost controller if I have a Link or Haltech ECU?
You need the solenoid, not a separate controller. The ECU does the control and gets to use rpm, gear, throttle and knock while it does it. Buy a three or four port boost control solenoid to suit the ECU and let it run the show.
Is a manual boost controller bad for the engine?
Not by itself. The risk is that boost moves with heat, altitude and gear, and nothing steps in when it climbs. Set it conservatively, watch a gauge, and get the car tuned at the boost level you actually drive at.
Three port or four port solenoid?
Three port suits most single turbo setups where you only need to hold boost above spring pressure. Four port is for external gates and dome control when you want boost both under and over spring. Match the solenoid to the ECU or controller running it.
