Type "4G63 engine for sale" or "RB26 engine for sale NZ" into Google and you get a lot of pallets. A photo of a lump, a mileage figure nobody can verify, and a seller who will not be around when the bearings turn out to be blue.

Here is our position, plainly: we sell engine parts and rebuild packages, not complete or crate engines. That sounds like a limitation until you look at how NZ builders actually end up with a fresh 4G63, 3SGTE, RB26, EJ20 or SR20. Almost all of them rebuild a block, either the one in their car or a used core. This guide covers the three routes and what each one really costs you in time and risk.

The short answer

  • The block already in your car is usually the cheapest good engine you will find. It is here, it fits, and you know how it has been driven.
  • A used import is the fastest way to get a running engine and the slowest way to find out what is wrong with it. Treat the price as a deposit, not the total.
  • A rebuild package is the middle road: a known spec, forged parts where they matter, and one order instead of five.
  • Whichever way you go, the money is in the machining and the labour, not the listing price. That is where people get caught.

Rebuild vs import

The honest comparison starts with what you are buying. A used import is a sealed box. Nobody can tell you whether it was serviced, whether it spent its last year on a tune that was too lean, or how many owners it had before the container. Low kilometre claims are common and hard to check. Sellers are not always wrong, but the risk sits entirely on your side of the deal.

We see the same pattern every few weeks. Someone buys a cheap import, drops it in, and it smokes or knocks within a month. Then it comes apart anyway, and now they are paying for the rebuild they were trying to avoid plus a set of gaskets, freight and two weekends. A used engine still needs a full set of seals and bearings to be trusted, so the moment you decide to open it, the price advantage mostly disappears.

Rebuilding what you have avoids all of that guesswork. You know the history, the block is already in the country, and the machine shop can measure exactly what you are working with. The cost is time. The block goes away for machining, parts have to be ordered around the measurements, and the car sits.

Fitment is not a detail

A different engine is rarely a straight swap. Mounts, gearbox bellhousing, driveshafts, wiring, ancillary clearance and the exhaust all move when the engine changes, and the cheapest engine in the listing can become the most expensive one in the car. The cert side of it

In New Zealand, a modified car needs low volume vehicle certification before it gets a warrant. Putting a different engine into a chassis that never came with it is a modification, and the certifier looks at the whole install: mounts, fuel lines, brake capability, wiring and driveline. Nobody can promise you a pass, and the outcome depends on how the work is done rather than which engine you picked.

Rebuilding the engine your car came with keeps you on the paperwork you already have. Swapping in something different adds a step, so price the cert work at the start rather than after the engine is in. We cover what that process looks like in will it pass cert and WOF in NZ.

What a rebuild package gets you

Every package we list is built from the same core: forged pistons from JE, CP or Wiseco, forged rods from Eagle, Manley or Brian Crower, a Cometic MLS or Tomei head gasket, an ARP or Mazworx head stud kit, a main stud kit where the engine takes one, and ACL Race Series main and rod bearings. The packages are priced below the same parts bought line by line. More useful than the price is that everything arrives together, which is the difference between an engine build and an engine that lives on a stand for a year.

For the Evo and VR4 crowd, the 4G63 engine packages are listed by generation and by compression, covering EVO I to III, EVO IV, EVO V to IX and the VR4, with CP Pistons and either Eagle or Manley rods. The gasket is stated in the product title, so you can pick a 1.2mm Tomei or a 1.3mm Cometic without guessing.

Skyline and GT-R builders can take the RB26 rebuild packages, which come with CP Pistons, Manley or Eagle rods and a choice of Tomei 1.2mm, Tomei 1.5mm or Cometic 1.3mm head gasket. Subaru is covered by the EJ20 packages, where the important detail is the thrust arrangement: end thrust or centre thrust, and AVCS or not. Getting that wrong is the most common EJ ordering mistake we see.

Nissan four cylinder people have the SR20 packages, including SR20DET, GTiR and SR20VET versions with ARP or Mazworx stud kits. Toyota is split between the 3SGTE packages for Gen 1 and Gen 2, and the 2JZ packages with Eagle or Manley rods. The full range sits on the engine rebuild packages page.
