A 1JZ that has spent ten years on more boost than Toyota intended rarely dies quietly. It rattles under load, drops a cylinder on a compression test, or pushes coolant into the oil after one hot lap. Ringlands, rod bearings and head gaskets are the parts that give up, and the fix is the same every time: strip it, measure it, and put it back together with parts that suit the boost you actually run.
The 2JZ, 3SGTE and 3SGE Beams follow the same script. Below is what goes into a rebuild package for each of them, what your part choices change once the engine is running, and how to pick the level that matches your power target.

What is in a rebuild package
Every kit on the engine rebuild packages page is built from the same shopping list: forged pistons from JE, CP or Wiseco, forged rods from Eagle, Manley or Brian Crower, a Cometic MLS or Tomei head gasket, an ARP or Mazworx head stud kit, a main stud kit where the engine takes one, and ACL Race Series main and rod bearings. What changes between packages is the brand mix, the gasket thickness and the compression ratio.
For the 2.5, the Toyota 1JZ Engine Rebuild Package is the kit we list in the 1JZGTE package range. It suits the common 1JZ story: a tidy engine that has been boosted for years and now needs pistons, rods and a fresh bottom end rather than another head gasket.
The 2JZ gets two standard options. The CP Pistons, Eagle Rods and Cometic 1.3mm head gasket package is the value pick of the pair. The CP Pistons, Manley Rods and Tomei 1.2mm head gasket package steps up the rod and swaps to a thinner Tomei gasket. Both sit in the 2JZGTE rebuild packages collection.
If the plan is a serious 2JZ, look at the 2JZ Premium packages. Those are listed with a stated compression ratio, either 8.5:1 or 10.0:1, in a Cometic or a Tomei head gasket version. Buying from that range means you choose the compression up front instead of working it out later with a calculator and a bag of gaskets.
Four cylinder builders get the same treatment. The 3SGTE rebuild packages cover Gen 1 and Gen 2 with CP Pistons and either Eagle or Manley rods. The 3SGE Beams packages run JE Pistons with Eagle or Manley rods, which is where most Beams builds end up once boost or a decent cam package is on the table. Check your generation before you buy, because a Gen 3 3SGTE is not the same shopping list as a Gen 1.
Choosing pistons, rods and compression
Piston brand is the question we get most, and it is less dramatic than the forums make it. CP and JE are both forged and both proven in these engines. The practical difference for a NZ builder is which one is listed for your engine and bore size, and what the package already uses. Our JZ and 3SGTE kits are built around CP, the Beams kits around JE.
Rods deserve more of your attention than piston brand does. Eagle rods are the value choice in our packages and are plenty for a strong street engine. Manley rods sit above them and are what we would put under a car that sees track days, drag passes or long stretches at high boost. If the build plan involves a turbo two sizes up from stock, buy the rod you want now.
Compression is the choice people rush. Lower compression, like the 8.5:1 Premium 2JZ packages, leaves room to run boost and timing on pump fuel. Higher compression, like the 10.0:1 versions, wakes the engine up off boost and makes it nicer to drive on the street, but it narrows your tuning window once the boost climbs. Gasket thickness feeds into the same sum. A thicker gasket lowers static compression a fraction and opens up clearance between the piston and the head, which matters after the deck has been machined.
Work these out together, ideally with the person doing your machining. Pistons, rod length, deck height and gasket thickness are one calculation, not four separate purchases.
Head studs, gaskets, bearings and the small stuff
Head studs stop being optional once you add boost. For the inline six, the ARP 203-4205 head stud kit covers 1JZ and 2JZGE/GTE, and the ARP 203-5405 main stud kit holds the bottom end together when the power goes up. ARP 2000 crank and cam bolts are there too if you are refreshing the front of the engine while it is apart.
On the 3SGTE, the ARP 203-4204 12 point head stud kit is the one to order, with an ARP 203-6002 rod bolt kit and an ARP 203-2801 flywheel bolt kit if you are going right through the engine. The Cometic 1.3mm head gasket in 87mm bore is the matching MLS gasket for a Gen 1 or Gen 2 build.
Bearings are cheap compared to a second rebuild. ACL Race Series covers both families: main, rod and thrust sets for the 2JZ, and the same three for the 3SGTE. Buy them with the kit rather than reusing what came out, because a bearing that has seen detonation is not a bearing you want under a fresh set of rods.
Then there is the small stuff that always gets forgotten. Viton valve stem seals from GSC or Supertech. An ATI Super Damper for a JZ that will live at high rpm. A Tomei adjustable cam gear if you are degreeing cams, and a set of NGK iridium plugs so you are not chasing a misfire on the dyno. None of it is exciting, and all of it is cheaper now than after the engine is in the car.
