How to get JZ fitment right the first time, why "the computer says it fits" goes wrong, and the true cost of importing parts yourself versus buying local in NZ.
You found the part, the listing says it suits your engine, you ordered it, and three weeks later a box turns up with the wrong head type or the wrong cam gear. Now you are out the money, out the freight, and stuck deciding whether to fight for a refund from the other side of the world or just eat it. Fitment mistakes are some of the most expensive lessons in this game, and almost all of them are avoidable.
So this post is two honest questions answered plainly: will this part fit my JZ, and is importing it yourself really cheaper once you add up everything the price tag does not show you.
Getting fitment right the first time
The JZ family looks simple from the outside. One engine code, one set of parts, job done. In practice the platform has enough variants that a part can be technically "for a 1JZ" and still not bolt to yours. The trouble is that most online catalogues match on a broad model name, not on the exact engine in your bay.
Why "the computer says it fits" goes wrong
A fitment lookup tied to a year and chassis is only as good as the data behind it, and JDM motors get swapped between cars constantly. The system thinks you have the engine the car left the factory with. You might have something three owners and two imports later. That is how a part shows green on the website and red in your hands.
The variant traps that catch people out on JZ builds:
- VVTi versus non-VVTi. This is the big one. The 1JZ and 2JZ both came in early non-VVTi and later VVTi forms, and they differ in head, cam gear, oil feed and plenty of bolt-on hardware. A cam, gasket or timing component for one will not simply transfer to the other.
- Head type. Single cam, twin cam, GE versus GTE casting: these change valvetrain, gasket and stud fitment even when the block underneath looks the same.
- Year and chassis. Mid-generation revisions move sensor types, loom plugs and accessory mounts around, so two cars that look identical on paper can need different parts.
- What is actually in the car now. Once a motor has been swapped or part-built, the chassis number tells you nothing useful about the engine. The engine code does.
The simple fix: match the code, then confirm with a human
The reliable method is boring and it works. Find the actual engine code stamped on your block, not the model the car was sold as. Note whether it is VVTi or non-VVTi. Know your chassis and what has already been changed under the rocker cover. Then confirm with someone who knows the platform before you pay, rather than trusting a dropdown menu to be right.

Is importing it yourself really cheaper?
This one deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. Sometimes a part genuinely is cheaper to import, especially something rare that nobody stocks here. But the headline price on an overseas listing is rarely the price you actually pay, and the gap is where the savings disappear.
What gets added to that tempting number:
- International freight. Heavy engine parts cost real money to ship, and the quote at checkout is often only the start of it.
- GST and duty. Goods coming into New Zealand attract GST, and the courier or customs broker collects it before the parcel is released.
- Customs handling and broker fees. The admin of clearing a parcel is a charge in its own right, separate from the tax.
- Lead time. Weeks of waiting, sometimes longer if a parcel goes astray with a budget courier, and your build sits on a stand the whole time.
Add those up and the "cheaper" overseas part is frequently level with or dearer than local stock, before you have even fitted it.
The real cost is what happens when it goes wrong
Price is only half the story. The bigger risk with self-importing is what you do when the part arrives wrong, damaged or faulty. A seller offshore has no obligation to you under New Zealand law, returns mean shipping a heavy part back at your cost, and a "warranty" you cannot practically claim is no warranty at all. If a turbo or a set of internals turns up faulty, you want that sorted here, not negotiated by email across time zones.
Buying local stock changes the maths. The part is in the country, so it turns up in days by tracked courier rather than weeks. If there is a fitment question, you talk to someone who races this stuff. And anything sold to you here is covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, which means a faulty part is the retailer's problem to fix, not yours to absorb. That backing is worth real money the day something does not go to plan.
None of this means importing is always wrong. It means you should compare the true landed cost and the support, not just the two numbers on two screens.
