The G Series questions we get are nearly always the same two. Which frame do I need, and which turbine housing goes with it. People spend weeks arguing about the first one and then pick the second by guessing, which is backwards, because the housing decides how the car feels to drive.

The short answer

  • The G25 family suits 2.0L to 2.5L engines where response matters as much as the top end.
  • The G30 range is the middle of the market and covers most serious 2.0L to 3.0L builds.
  • G35 and up belong on big sixes, V8s and drag cars, and they need the fuel system and engine to match.
  • Choose the turbine housing A/R and flange with the same care you gave the frame. It is not an afterthought.

How Garrett names the G Series and what the numbers mean

The first number is the frame. The second is the power Garrett rates that turbo for, so a G25-550 sits below a G25-660, and a G30-770 sits between the G30-660 and the G30-900. Those ratings assume the fuel, the tune and the supporting parts are all there. Read them as the top of the turbo's window rather than a promise for your car.

The turbine housing is described by its A/R and its flange. A smaller A/R such as a .49 or .61 fills earlier and holds boost lower down, with more backpressure at high rpm. A larger A/R such as 1.01 or 1.21 gives up some of that early response and breathes better up top. Same turbo, different car.

Flange type is a fitment decision. T25 single entry suits smaller factory style manifolds. T3 single entry, written T3SE, is the common swap flange on a lot of NZ builds. T4 dual entry, written T4DE, is the big frame and divided manifold option. V-band inlet is the tidiest of the lot and is what most custom manifolds are built for now.

You will also see IWG and EWG. Internally gated housings have the wastegate built in, which keeps the plumbing simple. Externally gated housings need a separate gate on the manifold and give much better boost control when the power goes up.

Picking the right one for your build

2.0L to 2.5L, response first

The G25 frame is aimed squarely at this. The G25-550 T25 single entry IWG .49 A/R is the easy answer for a car that spends its life on the road or a tight circuit, because the small housing and internal gate keep both the lag and the install simple. Want more top end from the same frame? The G25-660 with the .92 A/R V-band external gate housing trades a little response for room to grow. Both live in the G25-550 range alongside the flanges and clamps you need.

2.0L to 3.0L, the G30 sweet spot

This is where most of our turbo sales land. The G30-660 and G30-770 cover the ground between a strong street car and a proper track build, and the housing choice does the fine tuning. The G30-660 in T3SE with the .83 A/R suits a 2.0L that needs to be driveable. Step across to the G30-770 with the same .83 A/R and you keep a similar feel with more capacity, or take the 1.01 A/R T3SE version if the engine revs out and you want the top end. The full G30-770 range shows every housing option in one place.

For a big six that still has to behave on the street, the G30-900 in T3SE .83 A/R is worth a look before you jump a frame size.

Big sixes, V8s and drag builds

The G35 and G40 frames are a different conversation. You need the block, the fuel system and the tuner sorted before the turbo is the limiting factor. The G35-900 V-band EWG .83 A/R is a common 2JZ and RB choice. Above that, the G35-1050 in T4DE 1.06 A/R and the G40-1150 T4 dual entry 1.06 A/R are drag and big power territory. The G40-900 V-band single entry 1.19 A/R suits a large engine that wants flow more than it wants snap.

At the top, the G42-1200 in T4 dual entry 1.01 A/R is for cars built around the turbo rather than the other way round.

What to buy with it

A turbo on its own does not bolt to anything. Externally gated housings need a wastegate, so read our external wastegate sizing guide before you order. You also need the right flanges and clamps: the G25 and G35 V-band inlet flange and matching outlet flange for the smaller frames, or the G40 and G42 V-band inlet flange and V-band inlet clamp on the big ones.

Turbo speed is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a G Series. The Speed Sensor Street Kit suits a road car, and the Speed Sensor Pro Kit is the one for a logged race setup. Both let the tuner see how close the wheel is to its limit instead of guessing from a boost trace.
