A fuel pressure regulator is the least glamorous part of a fuel system and the one that quietly ruins the most tunes. Get it right and the injectors see the same pressure difference at idle and at full boost. Get it wrong and the tuner spends an afternoon chasing a fuelling wobble that was never in the map.
The short answer
- Most street builds are fine on a 6AN bypass regulator with a boost reference line. The Turbosmart FPR6 is the default here.
- Keeping the factory rail? Buy a rail mount replacement instead of re plumbing the car. Turbosmart and GFB both make one.
- Step to 8AN when the pump and lines have grown. A regulator that cannot flow what the pump sends will not hold pressure steady.
- Buy a gauge with it. A regulator without a gauge is a guess, and base pressure is the first thing any tuner will ask for.
How a regulator works and what the numbers mean
The pump sends more fuel than the engine needs, on purpose. The regulator sits after the rail, opens a return port and bleeds the surplus back to the tank. The rail keeps priority on flow, and the amount the regulator lets past sets the pressure the injectors see.
Boost reference is the part people skip. A small hose from the manifold pushes on the regulator diaphragm so rail pressure rises with boost. That keeps the pressure difference across the injector constant, which is what actually decides how much fuel a given pulse delivers. Skip the reference line on a boosted car and the mixture leans out exactly when you least want it to.
Base pressure is what you set with no boost signal connected. It has to match what the tuner assumes, and it needs to be repeatable, which is the whole argument for a decent gauge rather than a hardware store fitting.
Port size is about flow, not power. A 6AN regulator on a modest single pump setup is fine. Once the pump can shift far more than the engine uses, an undersized regulator becomes the restriction and pressure creeps at idle.
Picking the right regulator for your build
Keeping the factory rail
The Turbosmart FPR Kompact drops into a Bosch style rail mount location, and the GFB FX-S is a rail mount replacement for the same job. Both suit a car that has bigger injectors and a stock looking engine bay. Nissan owners chasing a period correct look tend to go for the Tomei Type S, with the Tomei rail adaptor to suit.
Standard street and club car, 6AN plumbing

Bigger pumps, 8AN plumbing
Move to the Turbosmart FPR8 or the GFB FX-D. The Radium DMR-RA direct mount regulator in 8AN ORB bolts to the rail and removes a pair of fittings from the system, which matters in a crowded bay. Radium also list a multi port regulator for setups feeding more than one rail.
Race and high flow
Aeromotive covers this end with the A1000 injected bypass regulators in 8 and 10, the Extreme Flow EFI regulators including a two port version, and a dedicated regulator for belt drive pumps. If the car runs a mechanical pump, that last one is the answer to a problem the others cannot solve.

What to buy with it
Start with the gauge. Turbosmart list a liquid filled 0-100psi unit, Tomei have their own, and Radium offer gauges with inline, 90 degree and 8AN ORB adapters so you can put the dial where you can actually read it. Aeromotive and GFB both list gauges as well.
Mounting hardware saves a fabrication job. Turbosmart make a billet bracket for the regulator and a matching filter bracket, and Radium sell a remote mount adapter kit if the regulator is coming off the rail.
Adaptors matter on Japanese engines. The Turbosmart Toyota and Subaru rail adaptor and the Tomei Nissan adaptor exist because the factory rail thread is rarely what the regulator wants.
Rebuild kits are worth knowing about before you need one. Aeromotive list an EFI regulator service kit and AEM list a rebuild kit, which is a better outcome than replacing the whole unit after a few seasons on ethanol.
If the rail pressure needle will not sit still with big injectors and a high flow pump, look at a fuel pulse damper such as the Radium FPD-R inline unit. Radium make inline and OEM style versions, plus a combined regulator and damper.

FAQ
Do I need an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator?
Only when the factory one runs out of range or flow. Bigger injectors, a much bigger pump or a fuel setup that needs a different base pressure are the usual reasons. If the standard regulator holds a steady rail pressure that rises one to one with boost, leave it alone.
What does one to one boost reference mean?
The regulator is fed a boost signal so rail pressure climbs at the same rate as manifold pressure. That keeps the pressure difference across the injector constant, so a given injector pulse always delivers the same fuel. Without it, the injectors go leaner as boost rises.
Should I get a 6AN or an 8AN regulator?
Match it to the fuel system, not the engine badge. A 6AN unit like the Turbosmart FPR6 suits most street builds on a single in tank pump. Step up to 8AN, such as the FPR8 or the Radium DMR-RA, when the pump and lines are bigger and you do not want the regulator to be the restriction.
Where does the regulator mount?
After the fuel rail, so the rail gets fuel first and the regulator bleeds the excess back to the tank. Direct mount and rail mount versions bolt straight to the rail, while remote units mount on the firewall or guard with an adapter kit.
Do I need a fuel pulse damper as well?
Not on most street cars. Dampers earn their place when big injectors and a high flow pump set up pressure spikes in the rail that upset the tune or make the gauge needle dance. Radium list inline and OEM style dampers if you get there.
