Search "3SGE turbo kit" and you expect a box with a manifold, a turbo and some pipe in it. That is not how a boosted Beams happens. What you actually buy is a bottom end, a turbo and gate, a fuel system and a tune, and a fabricator who knows your chassis.

The Beams 3S-GE is a good engine to start with. The head flows, the valvetrain is well supported, and the block takes a proper rebuild. The catch is that Toyota built it to make its power without boost, so the first job is the bottom end. To be clear before you scroll: we sell the parts and the rebuild packages, not complete engines.

The short answer

  • There is no boxed bolt on kit. Budget for fabrication as well as parts.
  • Do the bottom end first. Forged pistons drop the compression to something you can boost and forged rods stop the cheap failure.
  • Pick the turbo and the wastegate around a 2.0L that you want to be driveable, not around a dyno number.
  • Fuel and management get sorted at the same time as the turbo, not after the first tune goes lean.
  • A factory naturally aspirated car going turbo is an LVV cert job in NZ, so plan the install around that.

Why the bottom end comes first

The Beams runs high static compression because it was designed to make its power on air and revs. Bolt a turbo onto that and you are fighting knock from the first psi, which is why boosted stock Beams engines tend to have short careers.

Forged pistons fix two problems at once. They bring compression down to a level you can put boost against, and they survive detonation events that would put a hole in a factory piston. Forged rods are the other half, because the standard rod is the part that lets go when someone finds another 1000rpm. That is the whole argument for starting with a rebuild rather than starting with a turbo.

What is in a Beams rebuild package

The 3SGE Beams rebuild packages come in two flavours. The JE piston and Manley rod package is the one for a build that will see revs and hard use. The JE piston and Eagle rod package is the value option and it goes into plenty of quick street cars.

Our Engine Rebuild Packages page sets out what a package contains: forged pistons, forged rods, a Cometic MLS or Tomei head gasket, an ARP or Mazworx head stud kit, a main stud kit where the engine uses one, and ACL Race Series main and rod bearings. Each package is priced under the sum of the individual parts.

What a package does not include is the machining. The block still needs measuring, honing and balancing by an engine shop, and the clearances get set to the parts you actually bought.

Cams, springs and valves

The head is where the Beams earns its reputation, and it is worth doing while the engine is apart. Our 3SGE and 3SGTE Gen 3 range has the Kelford grinds listed for the Gen3 and Gen4 3S-GE: the 284/276 4-195-A and the bigger 296/284 4-195-B.

Read those listings carefully. Both are catalogued as naturally aspirated grinds. On a boosted Beams a big duration N/A cam is usually the wrong tool, because you end up bleeding boost out the exhaust where you wanted it building. If cams are on your list for a turbo build, ask us about the profile before you order rather than picking the biggest number.

The rest of the head parts are straightforward. The KVS109-3S spring set is listed for the 3S-GE Gen 2, 3 and 4, and Kelford supply Ferrea valves for the 3SGE in 1mm oversize: the F6064-8 intake and the F6066-8 exhaust. Kelford Cams are from Christchurch, New Zealand, which is one less freight leg than most valvetrain parts in this country.

Where 3SGTE parts do and do not cross over

This is the part that costs people money. The 3SGTE range is deep: ARP studs, ACL and King bearings, CP pistons, Cometic head gaskets, GSC valvetrain, an ATI Super Damper and a Radium fuel rail. It is tempting to shop it for a Beams build.

Some of it crosses over and some of it does not. The turbo camshafts in the Gen3 and Gen4 range are listed for the 3SGTE. The Cometic head gasket in that collection is listed for the Gen 1 and 2 3SGTE. Radium list a fuel rail for the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE Gen 3 to 5, which is the sort of listing that does cover a Beams. Read the title, not the engine family, and ask us if the listing is not explicit.

It also raises the honest question: if you are buying a forged bottom end, a turbo and a fuel system anyway, would a 3SGTE suit you better? Turbo, wastegate and fuel

A 2.0L four does not want a big frame turbo. Something that comes in early and holds boost to redline will make the car quick everywhere, and that matters more on the road than a peak number does. The smaller frames in the Turbosmart turbocharger range, like the 5862 and 6262 in T3 and T4 externally gated housings, are the sort of size a built Beams suits. In NZ, turbocharging a factory naturally aspirated car is an LVV certification job. The certifier will want to see the manifold, the intercooler plumbing, the fuel system and the wiring done properly, so the cheapest path is to build it to that standard the first time.
