Most blow off valve questions are really two questions wearing one coat. Which valve suits the turbo, and where does the air go once it leaves the pipe. Get the second part wrong on a car with an airflow meter and you get a rich stumble between shifts that no tuner can fully clean up.

What a blow off valve actually does

Lift off at boost and the throttle plate shuts while the compressor is still pushing. That air backs up through the compressor wheel, which loads and unloads. The fluttering noise is the sound of it, and over time it is hard on the wheel and the bearings.

A blow off valve gives the air an exit. A spring holds it shut and manifold vacuum on the top port pulls it open. Spring rate sets how much boost the valve holds before it leaks and how fast it shuts again, which is why springs are sold separately.

Dump valve, diverter valve, recirc valve, bypass valve. Same job, different exit.

Vent to atmosphere or plumb it back

On an airflow meter car, the meter counts the air before the turbo. Dump that counted air overboard and the ECU still injects fuel for it, so the engine goes rich for a moment. You hear it as a stumble on the gear change, and on a bad day it drops revs on the way into a corner.

Plumb back returns the air upstream of the turbo. Nothing is lost and the meter stays honest. It is quieter, which some people count against it. Speed density cars do not have the problem at all, so vent one if you like the sound.

There is a middle ground. Dual port valves like the Turbosmart Kompact Dual Port 34mm send part of the air back to the intake and part of it out, which is the usual compromise on a factory ECU car whose owner still wants to hear something.

TiAL Q and QR: simple and tough

TiAL Sport is an American company based in Owosso, Michigan, and the Q Series is the valve most engine builders reach for when a car is being built properly. TiAL list the Q as flowing 60 percent more than the valve it replaced, and it bolts to the standard TiAL flange without welding a new one on.

The Q in black and the QR in silver cover most builds. The QR is the recirculating body, so it is the one to buy if the air is going back into the intake. There is also a QR with a 38mm outlet when you want a bigger return path. Buy the spring with the valve. TiAL sell them at 2, 6, 8 and 11 psi, and matching the spring to your boost target does more for how the car drives than the valve body itself.

Turbosmart: the widest range

Turbosmart is Australian, out of Sydney, and it has the deepest catalogue of the three. The RacePort GenV is the weld flange race valve, sold in the usual colours plus a plain Sleeper finish if you would rather it disappeared under the bonnet. The black RacePort GenV is the one we see most on built engines, and there are female flange and plumb back bodies in the same family.

The Kompact series is the direct fit half of the range. The Kompact Dual Port for Subaru drops into a factory WRX or STI without cutting anything, and the EM valves cover late model cars where the factory valve is electronic. The PowerPort range sits above both, including the PowerPort in black.

GFB: keep the factory layout

GFB is Australian too, based in Peakhurst, New South Wales, and its strength is vehicle specific valves that use the factory hoses. The hybrid dual outlet valve for the WRX and Legacy and the version for the R32 to R34 Skyline, Mazda 3 MPS and CX7 split the air between recirc and atmo without touching the pipework. For VAG cars, the DV+ diverter valve replaces the guts of the factory electronic valve rather than the whole assembly.
