Most people find water/methanol injection when they run out of timing. The car makes decent power on pump gas until the tuner hits knock, and after that every extra kPa of boost costs more spark than it returns. Injecting a fine mist of water and methanol into the intake tract cools the charge and settles the chamber down, which hands some of that timing back.

The short answer

  • For a pump gas turbo street car, the AEM V3 kit with the 1 gallon tank is the sensible starting point. It comes with the pump, controller, solenoid and nozzles.
  • Move up to the 5 gallon reservoir if you do track days or long dyno sessions. A small tank empties faster than people expect at full noise.
  • The mistake we see most often is tuning a car so it needs injection to survive. Get a safe base map without meth, then add timing on top of it with a failsafe watching the system.
  • Buy the inline filter with the kit. Meth carries grit and the nozzle and solenoid are the parts that pay for it.

One quick clarification, because these two searches collide constantly. An electric water pump moves coolant around the engine and has nothing to do with spraying fluid into the intake. If a Davies Craig unit is what you were after, start with our electric water pump guide instead.

How water/methanol injection works and what the numbers mean

A pump pressurises fluid from the reservoir. A solenoid opens, and a nozzle atomises the mix into the charge pipe after the intercooler. The controller decides when that happens and how hard, usually referenced to boost so flow ramps up as the engine loads.

Water does the cooling. It takes a lot of heat to turn liquid water into vapour, and it steals that heat from the intake charge on the way in. Cooler, denser charge with less residual heat in it means the mixture is far less keen to detonate.

Methanol adds a second job. It burns, so it acts as a small amount of extra fuel with a high resistance to knock. That is why a water and methanol blend gives a tuner more room than water alone, and why the mix ratio matters to the person writing the map.

The pressure rating on a kit tells you how hard the pump can push fluid through the nozzle. Our AEM water/methanol range covers the 35psi V3 kits and the higher pressure 90psi version. Pump gas street car

The V3 35psi 1 Gallon kit, part 30-3300, is the one most of our customers leave with. The small reservoir tucks into a boot corner or a spare wheel well, and for a car that sees the odd hard run it holds enough fluid between top ups.

Track days, drag hits and long pulls

Same system, bigger tank. The V3 35psi 5 Gallon kit, 30-3301, stops the mid session refill dance. If you have ever watched someone lose a session because they were topping up in the pits, you already understand the appeal.

Bigger builds that want more flow

The 5 gallon 30-3351 kit is the 90psi version of the V3 system. Higher injection pressure gives finer atomisation across a wider flow range, so it suits larger displacement or higher power engines where the 35psi kits are working hard.

Already running an older AEM system

If you have an earlier AEM setup on the car, the V3 update kit, 30-3315, brings the control side up to current without starting again.

What to buy with it

Fit the inline filter, 30-3003, between the tank and the pump. Methanol picks up debris from containers and funnels, and the filter is cheap next to a stuck solenoid on a full boost run.

Keep a spare solenoid, 30-3326, if the car is a long way from a parts counter. The solenoid is what shuts flow off cleanly at the nozzle, and it stops fluid dribbling into the manifold when the system is idle.

Watch the tune while the system is doing its work. A wideband from our AEM gauge and controller range tells you when the mix has changed the fuelling, which is the first sign a nozzle is partly blocked or the tank is empty.

FAQ

Does water/methanol injection actually add power?

Not on its own. It cools the intake charge and calms detonation, which lets a tuner give the engine back the timing or boost it was pulling out. The power comes from the tune, so an untuned car with a kit fitted gains almost nothing.

Can I run straight water instead of a methanol mix?

Yes, and water only is the safer option for storage and for anything shared with a workshop. You lose the added fuel and octane effect that methanol brings, so the tuner has less room to move. Most street setups run a premixed water and methanol blend.

Will meth injection let me skip the intercooler upgrade?

No. Injection cools the charge in the last stretch of pipe before the engine, while the intercooler does the heavy lifting across the whole run. A car with a marginal core still heat soaks on a long pull, and meth just masks it for a lap or two.

What happens if the tank runs dry mid pull?

The charge temperature climbs and the tune that relied on injection is suddenly too aggressive, which is how engines get hurt. Run a failsafe that watches flow or level and pulls boost or timing when the fluid stops, and keep the base map safe without injection.

Do I need colder spark plugs with water/methanol injection?

Often yes, because most cars fitting a kit are also chasing more boost. A step colder iridium plug is the usual move, and plug reads are one of the better ways to check the injection is doing what the controller says it is.
